Why I'm Running
My first name is pronounced like look with an "s" and my last name is like "core". My family immigrated from India when I was young and like so many other immigrant families, we moved in search of the American Dream. My parents worked long hours in the flea market while my siblings and I went to school to get a good education. Experiencing discrimination after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, I knew I wanted to focus my life's work on social justice. I studied policy at Rice University and also got my business degree there. Realizing that one of the biggest civil rights issues affecting our community is the inability to access high quality schools turned my focus to public education. I served as a teacher, school leader and systems leader but what I have seen is that schools can’t do it alone. Access to stable housing, safe neighborhoods and walkable sidewalks are necessary components to a child's success. Every decision our city passes makes a difference for our children and future workforce. This is why I am running for re-election. To continue to create change for our current and future generation of San Antonians because I love my city and I love District 1.
